Wizard Reviews ANGEL # 9

And Wizard likes! READ HERE. Second comic they reviewed, that's pretty awesome.

Also, I read the lettered ANGEL:ATF # 11. I think it's my new favorite issue. Really happy with how it came out.

Also saw Alex Garner's cover for issue 12. Wow. Oh wow.

Good day today.

Chat?

Lots of good stuff coming out in the next couple of months:

1. ANGEL:ATF continues
2. SPIKE:ATF begins
3. EVERYBODY'S DEAD finishes
4. ANGEL:ATF Volume 1 Hardcover released.

Wondering if anyone would like to do an online chat? Not sure how to arrange it, but if any site has a chat room and you guys want to do it, I would love to. Maybe I can twist Ryall's arm to join in.

Stan Winston, RIP

Like most really intelligent people, I get my news from AINT IT COOL. And they have just received word that special effects master Stan Winston has passed away.

You may not know Stan but you definitely have seen his work. He created the creatures for Alien, Predator, Edward Scissorhands, the penguins (and look of the Penguin himself) in Batman Returns, the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the list goes on and on. He recently made the Mark One armor for Iron Man.

A few years ago, when I was going to direct EVERYBODY'S DEAD for Artisan, Stan invited me and the producer of the film to his studio to talk about either (A) Stan going low budget and making the zombies for us or (B) putting us in contact with one of his sister effects houses that could handle the zombies. I didn't care WHAT we were going for, I just knew we were going to STAN WINSTON'S STUDIO.

On the way there, not even the sight of a dog getting hit by a car could bring us down (well, much...I pretended it was a Stan Winston creation, obviously set up by the man himself to impress guests).

Once there, we sat in the waiting room for Mr. Winston. Staring back at us were the actual creatures from all his movies, including a full-sized T-Rex head coming in through the wall. I was most excited about the MONSTER SQUAD creatures, and this made Stan very happy.

We then got to go on a tour of the facility. It was an hour full of seeing monsters come to life (okay, we saw the Budweiser frogs come to life, but they're kinda monstrous), key cards to allow entrance into top secret rooms for the JURASSIC PARK sequel (then called "Extinction").

Stan was proud of each and every creation, and a sweet guy. I remember thinking that, in the middle of a somewhat annoying pre-production process (the executives didn't "get" aspects of the script, and were fighting to change the name of the movie to DEAD MAN'S PARTY or PARTY AT GROUND ZERO), the producer and I realizing that these kinda days should be appreciated. If you told 8 year old Brian Lynch he got to spend a day with all those creatures, he would have (a) crapped his pants because he was a pussy but also (b) had trouble waiting to get to that part of his life. Hollywood seemed all the cooler that day.

Also, when we went to lunch right after, Danny DeVito walked through the restaurant. I'm a huge fan of his, but considering I just spent a few hours with Raptors and Small Soldiers and Predators, I didn't get too excited.

Check out Stan's official site HERE to see how brilliant the guy was.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Winston.

New ANGEL! New DEAD!

This week, ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL # 9 hits stands (a mere WEEK after #8! We are just the sweetest!). FIRST NIGHT is over, and Angel is back to work. Surrounded by the Lords, Surrounded by the Lords' Champions. Spike, Connor, Gwen, Nina, Lorne, Groo and Illyria by his side.

Oh yeah, and Illyria saw Wesley's still around, and promptly turned back into Fred.

Plus Gunn watches the whole damn thing. What's his plan anyhoo?

Revelations galore! Fights to the death! Explosions! Angel Angel Angel!

Quick mistake that I want to point out before every gets it: while the inside front cover has the correct credits, the title page says "By Brian Lynch and Nick Runge". This left off Mr. Whedon and that's a shame. Although, again, he's credited on the inside front cover and the actual cover.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalso, EVERYBODY'S DEAD # 4 is out the same day! When last we left our heroes, Doug and Jack were trapped on an army base with hundreds of soldier zombies, only to be "rescued" by Doug's zombie dad, Wes and Aurora came home to find that Nuk had killed Aurora's room-mate Greta, Mosby has a plan, and evil Omega President Roy is (A) a zombie and (B) going to the house to get it back and eat anyone who stands in his way.

This is a dark, dark issue. But also pretty dang funny. With brilliant art by Dave and beautiful colors by Len, and some words by me.

Hope you enjoy both!

Can someone explain this?

This was a comment about ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL # 8:

Can anyone say cop out. What is it with Buffyverse writers not wanting to tarnish characters yet having Buffy treat Angel like crap in season five. The damage was already done, why not give her one more so called reason to hate Angel?

Good book, but Gunn was such a cop out.

ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL # 8 comes out this week!

Hope you guys dig it. There are three different stories in addition to the one page Betta George introduction. They are all very personal stories, that all deal with the same theme.

1. Gwen. It's kind of a personal tale, explaining where she is, what she was up to right before the fall. And her reaction to the fall. It's pretty heartbreaking even though we all know it does get better for her.

2. "The End is Here". A short story involving civilians' reactions to an entire city going to hell. They don't know Angel, they don't know Wolfram & Hart, they just know their city block now has demons running about and tentacles coming out of the sewers.

3. Gunn. This is the main event. Lets us know Gunn's state of mind big-time. Lets us know who turned him. Co-written by Mr. Scott Tipton.

I'm writing later issues of ANGEL:ATF as we speak, and it's amazing how important stuff issue 8 sets up. Pretty neat

Anyway, hope you dig the issue, and issue 9 is only, I think, two weeks after that! That's how we roll here at team Angel!

Cool & Collected!

Hey, grabbed a few pictures of the ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL volume 1 hardcover. Sorry for the quality, they're a bit grainy.

The cover, by Alex Garner. Angel and the Dragon are embossed and shiny, and the lettering is all shiny red. Pretty damn stunning.

The inside front cover. See the red cloth bookmark in there, too? Classy!

Title page. Bottom corner glow sold separately.

One of the chapter title pages. How cool is that? Also, a page from chapter three. Sorry for the spoilers if you haven't read the book, but yes, Angel does get thrown through a window.

Franco's original character sketches. There are a bunch. Also included is the original treatment for the first 5 issues.

Back of the book. And finally...

The spine. Also shiny.

It's pretty amazing, huh? And I gotta say, I have read the comics a lot, but reading them in this format, as one big story, it's a whole new experience. Plus Franco's art has never looked better, everything got the royal treatment.

Back to work for me. Later guys!

It's not every day you get to meet a Big Bad.

But today is one of those days. Strutting into Whedon's world in SPIKE:AFTER THE FALL (and, indeed, she is SPIKE:ATF's big bad) is this little lady...take it away, picture!

As you can see in Franco Urru's panel from issue 2 (her debut), this angry little pixie lady cheats when playing patty-cake with Illyria.

She will make Spike's life hell this summer. That is to say, even more hell, because, you know, he's already there. Your ears and eyes are unworthy of her name (her words, not mine). But she sports a beautifully made gown of all sorts of human and demon skin stitched together.

I love this character. Love writing her. She's the kinda creation that actually surprises me as a writer, as new, horrifying ideas pop up in my head while I'm writing her. She's taking over!

Worship her! Fear her! Start facebook fan groups for her!

Hope you like!

Reunited

Alex Garner's cover to ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL # 11 is below. Just a word of warning: there are kinda spoilers, and it may be too awesome for human eyes. Good God, Alex Garner is amazing.

Seriously, if you don't want spoilers, turn back now.

Though, it's not CRAZY spoilers.

I mean, you musta known this was coming.

Turn back now if you want to avoid knowing anything about the future of the series.

But it's not that bad, really.

And it's worth it, just to see this baby early.

Wow I hope this is a cover for one of the collecteds.

Okay, stalled enough...

...here it is, I do hope you like!

Thoughts?

Corker of a poll thus far

The fish and the dragon are neck-and-neck!

And wow, Spider is getting more votes than I thought. I think she'd get more if this poll were done a couple of months from now. When she has Spike's baby. WHAT?

Kidding, internet, I'm kidding. She has Wesley's.
